Deaf-Blind Program 30th Anniversary Celebration

It was a real pleasure for our family to be a part of the 30th Anniversary celebration for the Deaf/Blind Program on January 30th. I have been associated with the program through my position as the Director at Seabeck during the 20 years that the annual Deaf/Blind Camp has been held there and over the years have gotten to know many of individuals involved with that event. To me it said a lot about the importance and success of this program that so many of the people who were there have all been involved with it for so long. It was great to hear the stories from the early days and the commitments for the future.

The symbol that was chosen to represent the program was the “Golden Thread.” At the end of the evening the thread was unwound through the crowd until it touched everyone. It touched the amazing deaf and blind individuals who have received the services of the program over the years. It touched the many talented and dedicated staff members and volunteers who have provided those services. And it touched the supporters, Board members, and donors who have helped make the 30 years possible. As we watched the thread cross back and forth I am sure everyone in the room was having their own memories and thoughts about what their involvement has meant to them, but what we all shared at that moment was the fulfillment and sense of meaning that has enriched all our lives through being a part of something so special.

                        - Larry Hill, Past Executive Director, Seabeck Conference Center

I felt honored to be a part of the wonderful celebration of the Lighthouse Deaf-Blind 30 year anniversary. It was great to see so many people and friends. I particularly enjoyed the memories I had while listening to the stories of the other speakers.

The Lighthouse has provided the technology that will allow us to keep in touch with each other. This is a great help to us. Through the years, the Lighthouse classes have been a great help too, because they provide information on many topics that in some instances may be hard for us to obtain. Also, it gives us a secure place to socialize and, of course, the summer camp is a very popular week of enjoyment and fun.

Through the years the Deaf-Blind program has gone through tremendous change that has benefited all of us. I am looking forward to many more years of learning and friendship.

                        - Margarita Eng, Presenter and Past Lighthouse Employee

On January 30 over 225 people, including Deaf-Blind community members, interpreters, supporters, and friends, gathered in the Seattle Center’s San Juan Room to celebrate the Seattle Lighthouse Deaf-Blind Program’s 30th anniversary. Guests enjoyed catching up with long-time friends in the community, recording memories on video, writing dreams for the future, and viewing the timeline of the past 30 years of the Deaf-Blind Program’s existence.
