Technology Training Center

Seattle Lighthouse for the Blind

Goal:
Increase independence and self-sufficiency of Deaf-Blind adults through appropriate training and access to computer technology.

Program and Services:
Computer and related technology training for Deaf-Blind adults includes:
• Evaluation of potential assistive technology adjustments or improvements
• Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express for email communication with friends, family and co-workers
• Microsoft Word for word processing with letters, resumes, shopping lists and other documents
• Internet exploring for browsing the Internet, locating information and on-line services
• Microsoft Access for creating and managing databases of information
• Microsoft Excel for use of spreadsheets
• Windows Explorer for file management
• PowerBraille 40 or 80
• Scanning equipment
• Braille embossers
• General computer use
• JAWS screen-reading program
• Magic screen-magnification program

All program services offer:
• A safe, supportive, respectful and stimulating learning environment.
vLinguistically and culturally appropriate services
• Consumer involvement and input to ensure maximum respect, independence, choice and control over matters impacting each participant.

Eligibility:
Recipients of any of these services must be Deaf-Blind, legally blind and either Deaf, significantly hard of hearing or late deafened. Services are open to all Deaf-Blind community members and are not limited to Seattle Lighthouse employees. In addition, participants must have prerequisite skills necessary for the class or training requested.

For example: Before enrolling in training to use a PowerBraille refreshable braille display, a student must be a competent braille reader.

Funding:
Training classes currently funded through federal and state funds. Students do not pay tuition fees.
