Title: Braille Literacy Instructor
Department: ECS
Reports To: Training & Employee Support Director
Hours: Part Time-up to 20 hours per week
Summary:
The primary purpose of this position is to develop and deliver comprehensive Braille training to referred Lighthouse employees. This contract position is part of a two-year pilot program. This part time position is funded for up to 20 hours a week, depending upon the need of the students.
Responsibilities:
- Schedule and conduct preliminary assessment / evaluations to determine the participant's needs and the appropriate course of training
- Work closely with Training and Employee Support Director to develop and establish course curricula and scheduling
- Teach use of Perkins and slate & stylus
- Teach Level 1 and Level 2 Braille to adult learners
- Teach computer Braille as appropriate
- Design an individualized syllabus based on existing curricula, and follow ECS department training approach and philosophy
- Follow departmental procedures for maintaining complete, accurate files and notes on all participants
- Provide status reports using results of quizzes, tests, assessments and surveys to Training and Employee Support Director on the status of each participant
- Complete statistics and outcomes reporting monthly
- Coordinate with TES Director to plan and deliver one Braille intensive weekend or other similar activity
Requirements:
- Bachelors Degree in rehabilitation teaching, education or equivalent experience and education; teaching credential preferred
- Minimum 3 years Braille teaching required
- Mature judgment and sensitivity in interpersonal relations and among diverse groups
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of Braille code
- The ability to effectively teach people who are blind or low vision
- Knowledge of different teaching methods, approaches and activities
- Flexibility in teaching approach; match method with participant’s need and learning style
- Creativity
- Ability to take initiative, function autonomously, and be dependable
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Professional demeanor
