Many Ways to Give
Bequests
An outright gift can also be made by a bequest in a will. A bequest can be in any of the following forms. The Seattle Foundation can provide sample language in each instance.
A general bequest leaves a certain dollar amount.
A residual bequest leaves all or a portion of what remains from an estate after debts, taxes, expenses and other bequests have been paid.
A contingent bequest leaves assets only under certain conditions -- if a spouse or other beneficiary does not survive, for example.
The donor’s estate is entitled to an estate tax deduction for the full value of a bequest.
