Spring 2007

George Jacobson, President
Message from the President

Here at The Lighthouse for the Blind, it’s important to all of us to take time to recognize and celebrate our achievements. This January, I was happy to be a part of our Deaf-Blind Program’s 30th Anniversary.

The Northwest has become a hub for the Deaf-Blind community thanks to the employment, services, accessibility, and Deaf-Blind leadership that we have here.  It was a joy to see so many people who have helped to build the Puget Sound’s Deaf-Blind community together at the celebration and to honor their achievement.

The reasons for celebration don’t end there. Next year, we will celebrate the 90th anniversary of our incorporation. Though we have experienced many changes during that time, our purpose has remained the same --- to provide opportunities for blind and Deaf-Blind individuals to lead independent lives. That mission has carried us from the early days when blind employees manufactured and sold brooms door-to-door to our organization today as one of the leading employers of blind adults in the United States.

It’s hard to believe sometimes that I have been here for more than a third of the Lighthouse’s existence, but each year has brought new opportunities to participate in innovation and growth in meeting our mission. We’ve witnessed the development of our nationally renowned programs and we have seen the ground-breaking impact technology has had in opening jobs to blind individuals. I’ve been privileged to participate in the growth that has sustained the Lighthouse through the years.

In this edition of Horizons, you will get a chance to learn more about some of the people who have been a part of our rich history. You also will learn more about our educational efforts both internally and out in the community. We’ve also included some information on opportunities for donors to contribute to our organization’s future while receiving significant benefits at the same time. I hope you find these articles informative.

As always, I am grateful to all the members of our community who have worked to sustain and further our mission. I recognize and celebrate the contributions of each and every one of you for making the Lighthouse what it is today.
