Help Create a Week Without Barriers – Support the Deaf-Blind Retreat!

Every summer, Seattle Lighthouse staff and the Deaf-Blind community work together to create a rare opportunity: a week without barriers.

Every year, over sixty Deaf-Blind individuals from around the country gather in Seabeck, Washington to take part in a totally accessible, week-long event designed especially for Deaf-Blind people. Deaf-Blind participants come together to learn from each other, receive support, and build community.

The retreat takes place at Seabeck Christian Conference Center;

Don Meyer writes of his first Deaf-Blind retreat: When we arrived, I was flabbergasted.  To see all the Deaf-Blind people with their volunteers, meeting old friends, making new ones, and laughing all the while, was amazing to me.  That first weekend was a terrible struggle for me. It was not only such a new experience, but I knew very little sign language yet.  However, all the people were friendly, kind, and helpful.  I began to see a glimmer of hope.The retreat provides a week of total access: information often inaccessible in daily life is freely available here.

You can help make the retreat happen this year.  We’re lucky to have the participation of volunteer guides and interpreters to provide supports, but we must still raise funds for essentials like transportation, meals, activities, and braille materials.

Your support will help cover these essentials! Your contribution makes the retreat possible.Every gift counts. For instance, $20 could cover a set of braille materials, $30 could cover a training session on the latest assistive technology, and $60 can cover the cost of transporting two Deaf-Blind people to the retreat from the airport.The Deaf-Blind annual retreat is about opening doors: doors to community, to opportunity, and to independence.

Thank you for everything you do to help open doors in the Deaf-Blind community.
