We are proud to be launching a new Base Supply Center (BSC) in Fort Lewis Army Base this January! A project that began in 2005, the 13,000 sq. ft. facility will provide an additional store to our Ft. Lewis customers stationed and working on the north end of the base. “The people on base will be able to get their office supplies quickly rather than having to go off base,” says Vice President of Base Supply Centers Karen Kidd. “Our competitors off base also don’t carry items such as canteens or tactical gear, all of which we carry in our stores.”
With the development of the Stryker Brigades in 2001, the army base at Ft. Lewis experienced massive growth over the past decade, nearly doubling the amount of troops stationed there since the opening of our existing BSC. With limited space and only two registers, the need to better serve our customers with a larger store became apparent. The new store at North Ft. Lewis will feature four checkout registers, a sizeable customer service area, as well as plenty of aisle and product display space.

“I think we will be able to double our business on Ft. Lewis,” Karen adds. As our current BSC at Ft. Lewis provides a sizeable portion of overall BSC sales for The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc., the new store will become an excellent and viable source of revenue.
Karen is quite proud of the staff at our Base Supply Centers. “I don’t think I’ve ever had a more happy and dedicated workforce,” she notes. “Our staff really feel like they’re fulfilling the mission of the base, as well as the mission of The Lighthouse for the Blind, Inc.” The store will initially employ six to eight workers at the launch, and two people with visual disabilities have already been hired.
