Lighthouse People

Debbie Sommer, production worker, meets Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels while he tours the Rainier Valley neighborhood. Debbie is a member of the Deaf-Blind work group offering advice to Sound Transit on design and special accommodations that would make the Link Light Rail system accessible.

Murray Hampson, machinist set-up, welcomes a foster child into his home. Murray says six-week-old Latasha, who he will be fostering for two to six months, is “very professional at keeping me awake.”

Kay Holdaway, Kevin Jones, Joan Ladeburg, John Simms, Roosevelt Stevenson and Jim Smith attend the Talking Signs demonstration project in June. Talking Signs technology includes a receiver that vocalizes information about the features of a person’s environment such as locations of escalators, telephones and exits.

Sue Benson, Tami Berk, Cherie Furtado, Carolyn Traub and Jeff Wildenstein attend the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf national conference in Chicago.

Ronise Barreras, Scott Bass, Sue Benson, Tami Berk, Di Black, Deanna Donaldson,  Jackie Engler-Morris, Jeff Foster, Cherie Furtado, AJ Granda, Paula Hoffman, Amy Koehl, Mark Landreneau, Clem Provatakis, Phil Quibodeaux, John Romish, Debbie Sommer, Caryn Tenin, Carolyn Traub, Bruce Visser, Jeff Wildenstein and Linda Williamson attend the American Association of the Deaf-Blind (AADB) national conference in San Diego this past July.

Mark Landreneau, government affairs specialist, receives AADB’s top award in recognition of his excellence in leadership during July’s national conference. Mark also gives a presentation on Deaf-Blind leadership training at the conference.

Jackie Engler-Morris, Deaf-Blind community class assistant, gives presentation on how to set up and conduct a fully accessible Deaf-Blind Community Class at AADB national conference.

More about Jackie: Jackie joins Deaf-Blind Service Center’s staff as project manager in September. We at the Lighthouse wish her luck and look forward to continuing to work with her in her new position.

Kim Caporaso and Julie Crowell join the Group Supported Employment Department as trainers.

Jennie Moore joins the Public Relations and Resource Development Department as annual fund manager.

Annie Bruck, medical director, receives certification from the American Board of Occupational Health Nurses. Criteria for certification requires four thousand hours of work experience in the field within a five-year period, fifty contact hours of continuing education in occupational health, a bachelor's degree and successful completion of the national examination. Annie also serves on the committee to plan and implement a daylong workshop entitled “Core Curriculum in Environmental Health”.
