Magic Twenty-Fifth Deaf-Blind Retreat a Triumph Thanks to Lighthouse Donors

This August we celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of our annual Deaf-Blind retreat with the theme “Magic Twenty-Fifth”. Sixty-eight Deaf-Blind individuals and one hundred and thirty sign language interpreters gathered in the beautiful natural environment of Seabeck, Washington to participate in this extraordinary experience.

The Deaf-Blind Retreat is an opportunity for Deaf-Blind people from throughout the United States to come together in a totally accessible environment. Some individuals even traveled from as far away as Europe and South America to attend. Outside visitors to the retreat included staff from Senator Maria Cantwell’s office.

The significance of this event was summed up by Rebecca Atkinson, who came all the way from the United Kingdom for the retreat. Rebecca, a journalist for the BBC in London, has Usher’s syndrome II, a genetic condition causing hearing and sight loss over time. In regards to the retreat, Rebecca says, “the retreat takes away that sense of isolation. It’s nice to know you aren’t the only one. Here, you are one of many. Most people [who are Deaf-Blind] live their lives as a minority, here they are the majority. Here you can feel equal.” Rebecca describes her experience at the retreat as “simply brilliant.”
