Summer 2003
Community Support for Annual Deaf-Blind Retreat
As you are aware from reading this issues Message from the President, the Lighthouse hosts the Twenty-Fifth Annual Deaf-Blind Retreat at the end of August. Dozens of Deaf-Blind people in our community look forward to one special part of summer -- the opportunity to attend our nationally acclaimed annual retreat.
This year marks a quarter century of providing inspiration, hope and a newfound sense of independence. Much more than a week of fun and adventure, Deaf-Blind men and women get an opportunity to learn the latest skills and experience the newest technology available for leading independent lives. This experience has a dramatic impact on those who attend. Here are just a few comments regarding last years retreat:
...most Deaf-Blind people live in a world of isolation...as far as I know there is no other retreat in the world that equals the one offered by the Seattle Lighthouse for the Blind.
Each and every time I depart from the retreat I feel more optimistic about the possibilities that we Deaf-Blind people have and can actualize.
You can help provide a part of this vital experience. A gift of $12 will provide one day of meals for a retreat attendee. Or you can provide sets of materials converted to braille for as little as $17.10 per person.
For some, experiences at the retreat mark the beginning of a whole new life. A life not of limits and barriers, but of choices and possibilities. No longer isolated and alone, but engaged in life and part of a community that cares.
