Seattle Lighthouse Presents Senator Patty Murray with Congressional JWOD Champion Award

Government affairs specialist Mark Landreneau proudly presented Senator Patty Murray with the Javits-Wagner-O’Day (JWOD) program’s Congressional Champion award during her Wednesday morning constituent coffee session.

The JWOD program provides opportunities for disabled individuals to gain employment through manufacturing and sale of products and services to federal agencies. Nonprofit agencies working with the JWOD program are affiliated with National Industries for the Blind (NIB) or National Industries for the Severely Handicapped (NISH).

“These awards are given to [members of congress] who have acted in a major support role for NIB or NISH,” Mark says. “It’s because they have shown exemplary support of the JWOD act.”

“[Senator Murray] was instrumental in helping us obtain funding so that we could do the work,” he continues. “She’s also sent several staffers to the Lighthouse for tours. [Murray’s office] knows the Lighthouse and they support the Lighthouse, and in doing that they are also providing support for JWOD.”

Interpreter’s note: Mark’s comments were translated from American Sign Language (ASL) to English by a certified interpreter skilled in interpreting for Deaf-Blind people.
